Nature and Renewal: The Wild River Valley and Beyond- Presentation

Dean Bennett, UMaine professor, life-long conservationist and author, will take us on a century’s tour of the Wild River Valley, along the Maine/New Hampshire border. This magical and magnificent valley was heavily logged in the 1890′s and suffered all manner of environmental calamity, as did the people who once inhabited the area. Professor Bennett’s presentation takes us from wilderness to destruction and back to wilderness again. This is a story full of woe, heedless exploitation, desolation, followed by gradual, miraculous healing and inspiration. If you want to be inspired by the resilience of our natural world and witness the enlightened humanity that helps to make such restoration possible, than please join us for this special event.

Sponsored by the AMC Maine chapter conservation committee. The event will be Wednesday March 31, 2010, at the Curtis Memorial Library, 23 Pleasant St., Brunswick beginning at 7PM. Please contact Bob Goldman(207-831-5929) for more information.

Hiking Canada’s Sentiers Frontaliers with Carey Kish- Presentation

Maine Outdoor Enthusiast Carey Kish joined thirty hearty French Canadian walkers last August for a hike on the Sentiers Frontaliers, or Border Trail, that meanders along our northern international border. The group started from the customs station at Chartierville, Quebec, just north of Pittsburg, New Hampshire, and walked east roughly following the international boundary. The hikers passed over a series of 3,000-foot peaks amidst the rugged and unpopulated border region during their 55-mile, six-day trek. Plenty of big smiles, hugs, and handshakes made for easy communication and camaraderie during long days of walking. Please join us on Tuesday March 30 as Carey will show pictures from this journey as well as some images of a week-long solo adventure last October on the Freezeout Trail through the far northern reaches of Baxter State Park. This program, sponsored jointly by Maine Audubon and the Maine Chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club, continue

Maine Chapter to Host SOLO Basic Wilderness First Aid

How would you handle an injury in the backcountry? A simple sprain can become serious when there are miles of stone-littered and root-infested trail between you and definitive medical care. And the biggest threat isn’t always the injury, but the “E” factor- the “E”nvironment. Come learn how to adequately respond to backcountry injuries with confidence in this 2-day course taught by experienced outdoor wilderness medicine instructors from SOLO. Please contact Peter Broderick or Joleen Rice to register or for more information.

AMC Maine Woods Initiative- Presentation

Bryan Wentzell will talk about balancing new backcountry recreation, timber harvesting, wilderness lodges, and traditional recreation activities, and will also touch upon the Plum Creek Timber Company’s concept plan and what it means for development and conservation in the Moosehead region. The program is free and open to the public. It will be at the Bangor Public Library, Maine. Come early for the potluck dinner at 5:30 pm followed by the presentation at 6:30 pm. Bring a potluck item to share and your own dinnerware (plate, utensils etc.). Drinks will be provided and plastic-ware will be available. BPA Back in the News

BPA- bisphenol A is back in the news. The Food and Drug Administration now has “some concern” about its potential effects on fetuses, infants, and children. A 2008 review by the FDA found the small amounts in food containers to be safe. But recent studies have caused them to take a second look. In addition to its presence in food containers, it is sometimes a component in plastic water bottles popular among hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. Many water bottle manufacturers are now making BPA-free plastic products, or alternate materials such as stainless steel.

Ultralight Hiking vs. Traditional Gear- Presentation

When Bill Bryson, author of “A Walk in the Woods,” and his friend Steve Katz set out to hike the Appalachian Trail, they brought two very different styles of packing to the trailhead. This presentation will examine the differences between “regular” backpacking and “ultralight” backpacking and ask the question, “Was Katz really right?” Proponents of each style will display gear and argue the merits of each. Join us on Thursday, March 4, 2010, as the Maine chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club presents gearheads Charlie Ek and Mark Courtenay for a talk and demonstration comparing traditional hiking and packing gear to ultralight gear. They will continue
