With our early Spring, we are all thinking of getting out on the trail, whether the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) or our local trails. Here’s a program that you can register for to allow you to measure your progress towards getting 100 miles under your belt in 2016. The 40th Anniversary of the American Hiking Society (AHS) is marked by HIKE 40. AHS is the only national hiking & trails advocacy group lobbying for such programs as the Land & Water Conservation Act and the Recreational Trails Program. AHS has organized for 40 years “Volunteer Vacations” to work on trail stewardship projects around the country. AHS usually has one or more projects in Maine. A.T. boundary maintenance has been a popular repeat project for the past 3 years. In the HIKE 40 Challenge, participants commit to hike 40 miles or 40 unique trails by October 13, 2016. It is set up as a fundraiser but you can list any fundraising amount – even zero.
