With its purchase of the summit and slopes of Baker Mountain, AMC has closed the “hole in the doughnut” of conservation lands in the vicinity of its Katahdin Iron Works property. Conservation easements placed on Baker Mountain lands will ensure their scenic and ecological values are protected forever.
The Baker Mountain parcels abut AMC’s Katahdin Iron Works property, and provide additional potential for backcountry recreation. The acquisition brings the extent of conservation and recreation lands under AMC management in the 100-Mile Wilderness region to approximately 70,000 acres—more than 100 square miles. These land purchases and management commitments mark major milestones in AMC’s Maine Woods Initiative.
