In cooperation with the South Portland Land Trust, members of the Appalachian Mountain Club have been building trails in a most unlikely place: in the shadow of Maine’s largest shopping development.

The Clark’s Pond Trail was cut last October, leading for about 1.3 miles along Clark’s Pond and its tributary, Red Brook, between Interstate 295 and the Clark’s Pond commercial development. Trail improvements being made this summer include bank stabilization, stairs, bridging, and parts of the trail will be handicap accessible. The cost of the project is covered by $31,000 grant obtained with the assistance of the City of South Portland. This work is part of the the West End Trails project of the South Portland Land Trust and future efforts may include trails on the Maine Mall parcel.
