Clarifying Statement Regarding the January Issue of Wilderness Matters

The opinion piece published on the front page of the Winter 2010 issue of Wilderness Matters, written by Bob Goldman, was not necessarily the opinion or position of the Appalachian Mountain Club or the Maine Chapter. The published piece should have contained a statement clarifying this. We apologize for any confusion or concern that this caused AMC members. Hall-Dale Outing Club Hikes Bradbury

On December 13, the Hill-Dale High School Outing Club participated in a Maine Chapter Youth Program winter hike. It was cold, clear and beautiful–a spectacular day to be out in the woods. From the top of Bradbury Mountain the outing club agreed to share a little holiday cheer with an impromptu chorus of Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer. continue

2009 Annual Meeting

This year’s Maine Chapter AMC Annual Meeting will be held Friday, October 2nd to Sunday, October 4th at Camp Kawanhee in Weld, Maine. Camp Kawanhee is on Webb Lake and is very close to Tumbledown Mountain and Mt. Blue State Park, where many of the weekend activities will take place. continue

Telluride’s Mountainfilm Festival is coming to Bridgton

Support Bridgton’s downtown Pondicherry Park project by viewing outstanding adventure and environmental films from the Telluride Mountainfilm Festival!

Two different showings will take place on Tuesday, June 24th at 5:00 and 8:00 PM at the Magic Lantern Movie Theatre in downtown Bridgton. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. The Mountainfilm Festival travels all over the world and has always been associated with high-caliber films with a commitment to social and environmental issues. Situated within Maine’s famed 100-mile wilderness, Little Lyford Pond Camps offer a unique, four-season retreat for outdoor enthusiasts to explore the spectacular mountains and wild surroundings of the Moosehead Lake region. To give AMC members and chapter trip leaders the chance to experience this amazing Destination first-hand, we’re running LLPC’s second Chapter Trip Leaders Familiarization Tour (also known as a “Fam Tour”) scheduled for September 20 — September 23, 2007. This trip will be hosted by Roger Scholl and the AMC’s Volunteer Relations Staff.

AMC’s new online edition of the White Mountain Guide gives you access to up-to-date maps, trail descriptions and safety warnings, as well as trail conditions and trip reports from members of our online community.

Filters Now Available on Calendar

If you visit our calendar today you will notice a new feature. You can now filter the calendar by activity type and/or region. So if you want to just see a list of upcoming trips in Western Maine, just see a list of trail work trips, or perhaps just see the trail work trips in Western Maine you can do that as well. As the warmer weather builds in and the overall number of trips increases we hope this will help you find activities that interest you!

Introduction to Hiking Workshop

Interested in trying hiking? Want to learn what is required to travel safely and stay safe on the trail?

Planning a safe and successful hike and being prepared for whatever Mother Nature throws at you, will be the topic of an evening workshop sponsored by the Maine chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC), Tuesday, May 15. The workshop is free and AMC members and non-members are welcome to attend.

Greenville SnoFest Celebration Feb. 10-19

For the third year in a row, the Maine Chapter will be involved in the nine-day SnoFest celebration in the greater Greenville area. Chapter members will be volunteering during the sled-dog race on Saturday, February 10. The race takes mushers from Greenville to Brownville and back; a distance of nearly 100 miles! The winner will receive a knife hand crafted by our very own Bryan Courtois.
