Maine’s Governor John Baldacci became the first sitting governor in about 40 years to climb Mount Katahdin on Wednesday, July 11, 2007.  After overnighting at the Chimney Pond campground, Governor Baldacci and a party of 9 summited Mount Katahdin via the Saddle Trail and descended by the same route.  According to Baxter State Park officials, the last sitting governor to climb Katahdin was Kenneth Curtis who summited in 1968.
