Dear Friends and Collegues:
Whew! Our ice storm strategy is beginning to pay off.
Many thanks are due to the volunteers who gave us over 1000 hours of
labor this past weekend. Their efforts, plus our concerted work to
cut brush ahead of the weekend, has resulted in the safe and highly
efficient clearing of the following trails:
Old Speck- all
Speck Pond- all
Goose Eye- all
Carlo Col- all
Success Trail- all
Mahoosuc Tr.- from Old Speck Trail-Success Tr. from Rt 16-Mt. Hayes
Carter-Moriah Trail- from Gorham-Mt. Surprise Lost Pond- all
Direttissima- all
Glen Boulder- first 2 miles
Boott Spur- first 1.5 miles
Old Jackson Road-all
Lost Pond- all
Liebeskind Loop- all
Georges Gorge- all
Crew Cut- all
Pine Link- Dolly Copp Rd to Howker Ridge Trail
Air Line- Rt 2-Scar Tr.
Castle- Rt 2- the Link
Caps Ridge- all
Kendron Flume- all
Ethan Pond- Rt 302 to .25 miles before shelter Webster Cliff- from Rt 302 to Mt. Webster
Mt. Meader Tr- all
East Royce- all
Royce- all
These trails are among the AMC maintained trails worst damaged by the
ice storm. Trails not on the list may have damage of varying degrees.
Interior (3+ miles in) and wilderness area trails may still have
damage - at higher elevations (3000 and up) damage is light.
Interior and wilderness area trails will likely have the usual annual
winter crop of blowdowns - we expect to clear these trails by early to
mid June as we do each year.
Since the remaining damage is remote and difficult to get to and clear
with volunteer daytrips, we have decided to cancel our second cleanup
date of June 13-14; however, we strongly encourage those who would
like to help out to check with other area trail clubs about clearing
needs. Remaining cutting and cleanup will be done with the staff trail
crew during their regularly scheduled annual patrolling of our 350
mile system. We expect this patrolling to take significantly longer
than a usual year, but we are confident that the trail crew can most
effectively tackle the remaining interior damage and have it cleared
by early to mid June.
Again, thanks to all who have generously donated their time or money
to these efforts - a quick, safe, and effective large scale effort
such as this would have been impossible without both. Our work will
continue over the next few weeks, and we will advise you again by
email once all is clear.
Most Sincerely,
Carl Demrow
