Hello Friends and Colleagues:

I have some good news!

As of 5 PM on June 19th, all AMC maintained trails in the White Mountain Region including the 120 mile section of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail from Route 112 in NH to Route 26 in Maine have been cleared of debris from this past January’s ice storm.

While a good portion of the work was completed by the end of May, some stubborn interior wilderness area damage remained and was finally cleared as of Friday.

Please keep in mind that due to scope of damage, the cleanup will continue over the next few years as damaged trees continue to release broken crowns and limbs. Hikers should continue to expect to randomly find some ice storm related blowdowns, particularly after wind events.

We are profoundly grateful to those who have volunteered their time to help clear the trails and those who have helped us financially with this massive effort. To me, the related damage has been one of those events that brings out the best in everyone, and has only served to make the fabric of our trails and AMC community that much stronger. Thanks for your help and support!

Best Wishes,

Carl Demrow
AMC Director of Trails
