Barring all the recent controversy about closing this trailhead, it is generally pretty isolated. Arrived at 9:30 a.m. and saw about 8 cars already in the lot. As it turned out, we ran into only one party at the top, so it was literally isolated round trip for us. Awesome!
There was an AMC crew doing work on Big Jackson, apparently enlarging the bushwhacked trail that was there. The trail up Little Jackson is very, very poorly marked. Once you are on it, there is no danger of leaving it, but you need to follow the logging road from the parking area for quite a ways and then it was really hit or miss to figure out where the trail went. There was a fork in the road and we guessed right, correctly. I have since placed a big arrow sign out of rocks to help the next people. You need to look for the blue vinyl tape on the trees, there is literally no painted markers although the trail is in very good condition and not overgrown. It is a bit appalling that nobody has taken the time to paint the markers and had I known, I would have certainly taken the time to bring my marker paint. All-in-all, it was a great hike and very, very hot. It was 4 1/2 hours return and 95 degrees once we hit the car at 2:00 p.m.
