Sat-Sun Jan. 26-27. Family Winter Overnight

Family Winter Overnight, Brownfield, Maine. Designed to introduce families to the great outdoors in winter. An opportunity for children and their caretakers to share a winter experience unavailable to most. A heated cabin and cleared parking area near the tent sites allows for safe exit, should the need arise, from an otherwise wilderness setting. Review of gear, terrain and winter basics will precede setting up campsites, followed by 2-3 hour treks at a pace suited to the slowest member of the group. Most children should be eight years or older although exceptions are possible. Camp chores will be shared. Meals will be congregate except for Saturday lunch which each person should provide. Stoves, lantern, pots pans etc. will be provided. Each person/family will need specific gear and clothing, a list of which will be forwarded to participants in advance of the week end. Mt. Abram, Locke Mills. It's Super Bowl Sunday, so the football fans will be at home in front of their TV instead of skiing, This means we will pretty much have the slopes to ourselves! AMC Cold River Camp. Join us for a day of family oriented winter activities, using the AMC Cold River Camp near Evan's Notch as a base. Snowshoe and cross-country ski tours are planned for the morning. Winter games and activities are planned for the afternoon. We will gear the activities to the group and adjust for weather as needed, so will plan on holding this event snow or sun! Sat. May 4 Whale Watching Trip in Boston

Enjoy a coach ride down to Boston to board the New England Aquarium's Cruise to the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, which is one of the premiere whale-watching destinations in the world. Naturalists are on board to give history of the area and to help us learn behavior, conservation and migration patterns of whales, dolphins and sea birds during the 4 hour whale-watch. Part of the ticket fee will go towards funding of education, conservation and research programs at the New England Aquarium. Early afternoon will be open for exploring Boston on foot or Quincy Market prior to the whale watch. Meet in South Portland at 10:00 a.m. Sat. morning, return around 9:30 p.m. Total trip cost - $38.00 (children less). Families welcome. Get a guided tour of the Maine Chapter web site. Your guide will be our own webmaster Mike Willet. A great opportunity to see all that our web site has to offer. There are many resources available to us through the website. Meeting will be held in the main conference room at Nichols Portland. Directions- Take exit 7A off the Maine Turnpike, after passing through the toll booth take a left. Follow the spur as is curves sharply to the right. At the light again bear a left onto outer Congress Street, (Route 22 west). In about 50 yards turn left into Nichols Portland, across the street from The Tennis Racket. Proceed up the driveway to the stop sign. Proceed straight through the stop sign and follow the road as it curves to the right around the building. Park near the flag poles and go in through the glass doors. Someone will be there to let you in. Meeting starts promptly at 7:00 PM get there a few minutes early. Goose Eye, East (3794') and West (3870') summits via Wright Trail. 8.5 mi. loop at moderate pace, with some steep sections. Visit the crowning gem in the Mahoosuc range on a trail that is Maine's version of the Baldface Circle. CL's Debby Kantor and Tom Pettingill.

Vose Spur (N E hundred highest). A relatively tough bushwhack for those in good physical condition with some bushwhacking experience. Some thick and steep sections. Mts. Pierce (4312') and Jackson (4052') via Crawford Path, Webster Cliff, and Webster-Jackson Trails. 8.1 mi. at moderate pace with leisurely stops on the summits for lunch, feeding the Gray Jays, and taking in the splendid views. Also a stop at Mizpah Hut. CL's Debby Kantor and Tom Pettingil.

Inter-Chapter hike to the Northern Presi's via the Great Gulf. Plan for a full day on Jefferson, Adams, and Madison. We'll have an early start and will use the Great Gulf, Six Husbands, and Osgood trails for a 15+ mile day with 5,000+ feet of elevation gain. Schodic Point. This is another part of Acadia that is actually off of Mt. Desert Island. Schodic Point is approximately 15 miles from Ellsworth. The bike ride is approximately 30 miles. It will be at a moderate pace but is rated moderate to strenuous. There are some long hills. Limit to 10 riders plus the two of us.
