Sat. Jan. 8. Winter skills hike, Mt. Jackson. (4,052'.) This hike will be adjusted for the ability of the group. Intended as a follow-up to the December 7 Winter Workshop but everyone is welcome. You will need your full winter gear to take advantage of the full range of learning opportunities and to be comfortable in the winter environment. 2,152' elevation gain and 5.2 miles. Sat - Mon, Jan 15 to 17. Annual Winter Hut Trip to Zealand Falls - Enjoy a 6.5 mile X-C ski, snowshoe or hike (depending on conditions) into the beauty of Zealand Notch. We can explore the areas around the Hut on Sat afternoon and Sunday. Spend two nights in Zealand Hut on caretaker service. Meals will be prepared by the group. You should bring your own lunches and snacks. If you desire, it has become the custom to "dress" for dinner. Ask about this when you register. Winter gear & experience with a full pack is a must. Sat. Jan. 22-Sun. Jan 23. Family Winter Overnight, Brownfield, Maine. Designed to introduce families to the great outdoors in winter. An opportunity for children and their caretakers to share a winter camping experience. A heated cabin and cleared parking area near the tent sites allows for safe exit, should the need arise, from an otherwise wilderness setting. Review of gear, terrain and winter basics will precede setting up campsites, followed by 2-3 hour treks at a pace suited to the slowest member of the group. Most children should be eight years or older although exceptions are possible. Camp chores will be shared. Meals will be congregate except for Saturday lunch which each person should provide. Stoves, lantern, pots pans etc. will be provided. Each person/family will need specific gear and clothing, a list of which will be forwarded to participants in advance of the week end. Sat. Jan. 22nd. Spaulding and Redington. Joint ME/NH Inter-Chapter Trip: This will be a ski and hike to Spaulding & Redington via Caribou Pond. Plan on a full day of skiing, hiking, and bushwhacking to tag these peaks. We will be staying in Stratton that night so see the Jan. 23rd listing if interested in a complete weekend experience. Sun. Jan. 23rd. East Kennebago. Joint ME/NH Inter-Chapter Trip: This will be a ski and hike to the East Kennebago summit from Route 16. Sat. Jan 29. Mt Crawford (3,119') - Do you have ice axe and crampon skills but don't really get to practice? Come join others in the same "ice" boat for a day of slipping and sliding on this short (2.5 miles) but interesting trail to a summit with great views. This mountain has some steep sections (great for crampon practice), some open ledge (hope for ice), and some great places to self-arrest without much exposure. This is not indented to be an instructional workshop for beginners - you must have winter hiking experience and ice ax and crampon skills to share with the others. Sat. Feb 12. Workshop A Backcountry Workshop will be held as part of Snowfest in Greenville. Workshop will take place at the Beaver Cove Community Center at 12:30 PM, bring your lunch if you like. The workshop will start with a clarification of what different people mean when they talk about winter backcountry events. The workshop will cover terrain, snow/ice conditions, gear, food/hydration, and dress. The primary focus will be backcountry skiing but reference will be made to both snow shoeing and cramp-ons. We will include both day trips and overnights in the discussion. The workshop will include a CD presentation of the family winter camping outing that the Maine AMC Chapter sponsors each year. Sat. Feb. 12. Workshop Winter Survival Skills at Beaver Cove Community Center. How to survive if you're lost or stuck in the woods. No one plans on getting lost or stuck in the woods, but it happens. What you should have with you and what you can find for shelter in the woods. This workshop will start at the conclusion of the above workshop at approximately 2:30 PM and last for about one hour. Sat, Feb. 12. Workshop Navigation workshop will be held as part of Snowfest in Greenville. Workshop will be held at the Beaver Cove Community Center. Learn the basics of navigation and review skills you already have. Subjects will include how to read a map, read a compass, and stay on the right course. We will also touch on GPS. Sat. Feb 12. Snowshoe at our place in Center Ossipee, NH. Toboggan available. Warm house for breaks, lunch. L's Alix and Bob Pratt. Limited number; kids welcome.

Sat. Feb 12. Bushwack up Little Sugarloaf in Evan's Notch. Hoping for sunshine and good snow, no ice and lots of energy to get up the slope! Bring a smile and adventurious spirit. This is a great trip for beginner snowshoers wanting to use the points on their snowshoes. Late start and cookout at the top, weather permitting. Leader Dale Temm, co-leader Sarah Katz. Sun, Feb 13. Workshop GPS and Navigation. Hands on. This will be a follow up to the demonstration done on Saturday. A short course will be established and participants will have a chance to practice navigating to various points. Participants should come prepared to spend some time outside. Sat, Feb 19. Winter Hikinig Workshop 2. Acadia National Park. We will take our newly acquired skills and climb to an open summit, experiencing more of winter's delights along the way. 5-6 miles. Sat - Sun, Feb 19& 20 - Second Annual Winter Hut Trip to Lonesome Lake - Snowshoe or hike (depending on conditions) into the Hut at Lonesome Lake. Spend Sat afternoon exploring the Lake region or bagging another winter 4000 footer. Group meals will be prepared under instruction of Chef Ginny. Bring your own lunches and snacks. Sat, Feb 26. Winter Digital Photography Walkabout. This is an opportunity to take a leisurely morning winter hike and then spend an afternoon comparing photographs and improving digital camera skills. We will hike/bushwack (snowshoes may be needed) in a varied winter landscape near Sebago Lake, ME and then retire to warm surroundings to review pictures using a computer and an LCD projector--sharing tips and tricks. The hike will be 1-3 miles at a slow pace. The walkabout is geared for people who are getting acquainted with their digital camera. Sat-Sun, May 14-15 Wilderness First Aid. Training by SOLO of Conway NH, at Pine Point Fire Station in Scarborough ME The topic is emergency care but with a backcountry emphasis. Material will cover preparation and prevention, assessment, treatment and evacuation. Program includes lectures, discussions, and plenty of practice scenarios. Introduction to Backpacking Workshop: Learn what you need for safe overnight travel on the trails: tents, backpacks, food, stove, water purification, clothes, and a variety of outdoor hints. Sat., Sun., June 11-12. Beginner Backpack. Destination TBA. This will be a follow-up to May 19 Intro to Backpacking workshop but all are welcome. Plan on an approximate 4 mile hike over easy and moderate terrain designed for the beginning backpacker to use equipment, and get a feel for the backpacking experience. Sun., July 24 Family Picnic Bradbury Mountain State Park - This is a pint-size mountain for pint-size people. There are magnificent views of Casco Bay from the rocky summit. This outing is designed for families with young children. We will meet in the parking lot at 11:15 a.m. The walk to the top is just two-tenths of a mile. Bring your own lunch at we will picnic on the summit at Noon. We plan to descend via the Northern Loop Trail, a pleasant one-mile walk. Park admission is free for kids four and under, $1 ages 5-11, and $3 ages 12-adult. Parents are responsible for supervising their children. There are steep drop-offs from the summit. Sun., Aug 21. Bike and Balloon. Join fellow bikers for a 25-30 mile morning bike ride at a moderate to fast pace in the Auburn area. Bike ride finishes by early afternoon and those that wish to can join leaders and bike over to the Great Falls Balloon Festival in the afternoon. Festival activities include a Firemen's muster, food booths, music and other entertainment. Balloons launch at 5:00 PM for those who want to stay. Sat, Oct 1. Hike the Bigelow Range Trail near Stratton Maine. The first leg covers 4.9 miles over Cranberry Peak and on to the shore of beautiful Cranberry Pond and the junction with the AT. We then head south on the AT to Route 27 for 3.4 miles to finish the trip. This hike involves moderate to occasionally strenuous terrain with great views of the Bigelows and Carrabassett Valley from Cranberry Peak. We will spot cars to allow for this rewarding loop hike. Fri.-Sun., Oct. 14 - 16 MAINE CHAPTER ANNUAL MEETING Sunday River near Bethel, Maine. Join AMC members from throughout the Northeast at the Maine Chapter Annual Meeting. The Maine Chapter is hosting the AMC Fall Gathering in conjunction with the annual meeting. Enjoy peak fall foliage while hiking, biking, or canoeing. Sunday River is close to Grafton, Mahoosuc and Evans notches, and the Saco and Androscoggin Rivers. The facility includes a heated pool, spa, golf course and tennis courts. Reindeer farm, indoor climbing wall, and camping (for those looking for cheaper accommodations) are close by. Live entertainment is planned after the annual meeting on Saturday night. Register early! Sat., Oct. 15. Hike Mahoosuc Notch. Explore the challenging and difficult terrain of Mahoosuc Notch on this 8.3 mile loop. Excellent views from Mahoosuc arm. Short car spot required. Ls George Brown [email protected] & Maureen McCool [email protected]

Sat., Oct. 15. Hike to Table Rock in Grafton Notch via the AT with return via the Table Rock Trail. This half-day (1pm start time) trip offers spectacular views of Grafton Notch from this rocky perch high above Route 26 and the floor of Grafton Notch. We will hike north for .8 miles on the AT to the junction with the Table Rock trail and then on for .5 miles to Table Rock ledge with its aerie-like setting and steep drop-offs (younger hikers will need to be under the control of their guardians especially at this point) and then after enjoying the views we will continue back down into the notch via the Table Rock trail 1 mile to our starting point. 900 foot elevation gain and rated as moderate to strenuous especially in this direction. Sat., Oct. 15. Dunn Notch-Cascade Trail This is a loop hike along the MATC Cascade Trail to Dunn Notch and returning via the AT. The Cascade Trail follows a brook with many small cascades, crosses the East Branch of the Ellis River and climbs to Dunn Notch where the Upper and Lower Dunn Falls are located. The AT is then taking back to the parking area. Total distance is 2.7 miles. There are several stream crossings which may require getting participants feet wet. Hiking shoes are required. Sat. Oct. 15. Bike Ride We will bike Rt. 26 from Newry into Grafton Notch. We will stop to check out attractions such as Screw Auger Gorge, Moose Cave Gorge, Step Falls, Mother Walker Falls Gorge and other points of interest. Suitable for road and mountain bikes. Sat., Oct. 15. Golf at the Bethel Inn We will leave from Sunday River at 9:00am - Tee Time 10:00am. Cost is $25.00 for 18 holes of golf, with a cart. Lunch after at the Inn, lunches run @$10.00. The Bethel Inn has a beautiful golf course, but if it is raining we will not play. Sat., Oct. 15. Hike to Caribou Mountain Moderate hike of approximately 4 miles round trip to a mountain with great views. Meeting place and time to be determined but it will be mid morning. Leader, Gail Lawley.

Sat., Oct. 15, Caribou Mtn (2,850 ft.). This 7 mile loop hike in Evans Notch includes a waterfall and a 360 view from the top. Ls Joleen Rice and Mike D'Orio. 

Sat., Oct. 15. Fall Digital Photography Walkabout. This is an opportunity to take a leisurely morning fall hike and then spend an afternoon comparing photographs and improving digital camera skills. We will start from a location near the Sunday River during the AMC Fall Gathering and hike and take pictures through a varied landscape and then return to Summit Lodge to review pictures using a computer and an LCD projector--sharing tips and tricks. The hike will be 2-5 miles at a slow pace. The walkabout is geared for people who are getting acquainted with their digital camera. Sun., Oct. 16, Hike to Puzzle Mountain via the Grafton Loop Trail. 7.2 mile round trip to summit of this 3120 ft mountain (approx 2400 ft elevation gain). Grafton Notch and the Presidentials are on view from the ledges at the top of the first summit reached traveling northbound from the Eddy Road parking lot on this newly opened section of the trail. Sun., Oct. 16, Bike the Mahoosuc Century. Enjoy a pleasant 100-miler with other experienced centurion-cyclists along a route which traces the Androscoggin From Sunday River to Errol and then returns through Grafton Notch. We'll likely see early signs of winter as we hike the Firewarden's Trail to the ridge, cross both Avery and West Peaks (NE 4K), then complete the circuit over the Horns and return via the Horns Pond Trail. 15 strenuous miles.
