Fri-Sun, Jan 7-9 Natural History Weekend - Cross country ski or snowshoe to look for wildlife and birds in the Bigelow area. We'll have a general discussion of tracking, tree identification, wildlife behavior and habitat. Perhaps we'll observe deer and moose in their winter habitat. Mon Jan. 10, Brownfield. Back Country Ski Touring for the beginner. The day will begin with a review of winter back country gear, safety considerations and an orientation to the terrain. Hot soup, beverage and bread will be available for an outdoor lunch. (There will be a nominal fee to pay for the ingredients.) Tues. Jan 11, Brownfield. Back Country Ski Touring for the intermediate. This will be a full day in the woods with warming facilities and an outdoor hot lunch available around mid-day. (there will be a nominal fee for the lunch ingredients) The terrain is varied and offers views of the Presidentials from the Saco River Valley. The goal will be a full day of fresh snow and the pace will be determined by the conditions and the needs of the group. L Jim Tierney

Sun-Mon, Jan 15-17 Annual Winter Hut Trip to Zealand Falls - Martin Luther King Weekend. Enjoy a 6.5 mile X-Country ski, snowshoe or hike (depending on conditions) into the winter wonderland of Zealand Notch. Spend two nights in Zealand Hut on caretaker service. Sunday available for exploring the notch and area mountains. Meals prepared by the group. Great food by Chef Ginny. Individuals responsible for own lunches and snacks. Winter gear and experience with full backpack required. Space limited and this trips fills real fast. Don't forget your dinner attire for Sunday evening! Leader: Wayne Newton, Co-leader: Val Taylor. We will gear the activities to the group and adjust for weather as needed, so will plan on holding this event snow or sun! Fri. - Sun. March 3-5. Rangeley - A weekend of frolicking in the snow at the Saddleback Lake Lodge complex. We'll be near-by Saddleback Mountain for downhill skiing, and several groomed cross country trails. And there's lots of room to make our own cross country and snowshoe trails. We have accommodations for l5 in cabins with central heating, hot water, several bedrooms, and fully equipped kitchens. Lodging for 2 nights is $40. Bring your own sleeping bag, towel, and beverages. Trip to Boston for 4,000 Footer Club. - If there is enough interest, we will put together a trip for the 7:00 p.m. annual reunion at Cabot Auditorium, adjoining the AMC offices at Joy Street. The meeting is open to all who are interested in the Four Thousand Footer Club. We would especially like to get a group together of existing and new members to the Club. The options are open: car pool, bus, arrive early and shop, or whatever, but definitely have a good time!! Tuesday, April 25th - TRIP SCREEN WORKSHOP - Learn why pretrip screening is important when leading a group. Examples of questions and situations will be discussed to help leaders feel comfortable with the screening process. Wed., May 3 Introduction to Backpacking - Learn what you will need for tents, backpacks, food, stove, water purification and other (fascinating) important information for hitting the trails for more than a day. Join new backpacking friends on an overnight backpack to follow at a later date. Presenters will be experienced backpackers. Time is 6:30 - 10:00 p.m. at the Windham Public Library. Sat-Sun, May 6-7 Bradbury Mountain - Family Camp-out Have you been wanting to introduce young kids in your family to the fun of camping out, but aren't ready for a "far away" trip yet? Here's the perfect opportunity. Join us for some afternoon fun hiking around Bradbury State Park and then supper and camping Sat night at the campground. Top off a nice afternoon bike ride with a traditional English Afternoon Tea. It is a great opportunity to get together. Some folks have a great time dressing up and wear hats, gloves, etc. to it, while others dress casually. So let's pack an old fancy hat (to cover the helmet hair), gloves, and pull on a skirt over the bike shorts to enjoy a spot of tea. Skirts are optional for the boys. The tea will be held at the Bagley House Inn in the Durham area. The Bagley House is a beautifully restored 1772 country home, is Durham's oldest house and is listed on the National Historical Register. Tea will be served at 4:00. Reservations are encouraged so contact leader prior to April 30th. Tickets are $5.00 in advance. Mon, May 29 Memorial Day - BIRD WALK - Monhegan Island. Experience a magical time of year on the island birding with Ornithologist and U. S. Fish and Wildlife Biologist, Ron Joseph. Ron will help us identify birds by sight and song. Expect to see about 20 species of warblers, blackpolls (returning from the Amazon basin of Brazil), thrushes, orioles, tanagers, sparrows, flickers and other songbirds. We may even see a species that is not usually seen in Maine the blue-gray gnatcatcher. This will be a full day trip in order to spend as much time on the island as possible. Lonesome Lake Family Overnight
Sat./Sun. Aug. 26, 27: Join us for a family oriented overnight at Lonesome Lake Hut. Nature walks, swimming and other activities are available. Bring your swimsuit and sun tan lotion!
We will meet at the trail head at the Lafayette Campground in Franconia Notch State Park on Saturday morning. Driving time to the trail head from Portland is about 2 1/2 hours. The hike in is 1.6 miles, with an elevation gain of approximately 900 feet. We will move at a pace geared to the group. The hut provides 2 wool blankets and pillows, dinner Saturday evening and breakfast the next day, so we would only need to bring lunches and snacks for both days, clothing and personal gear, keeping packs light! Sleeping accommodations are in 4 and 6 person bunk rooms. The cost for AMC members is $60 for adults and $38 for children under 15 (add $4 each for non-member adults and children).
Reservation deadline is June 25 and require payment in full. Cancellations after July 23 will require a substitute in order to receive a refund, due to AMC hut reservation policy.

Saturday, November 4th and November 11th - Scheduling both days incase of bad weather. The Heath Meeting House (in Saco) serves a hunter's breakfast the first two Saturday's of hunting season. So, how about meeting and ready to pedal at 9:30 in Scarborough. Bike over to the breakfast (get there prior to 11:00 am) and then continue around thru Saco - Hollis - Old Orchard etc etc. for a day of biking. Plan on 12-14 mph with stops at any scenic spot and/or opportunity to shop. It is deer hunting season, so no white, tan or gray. Lots of orange and bright colors would be appreciated. 40 - 50 miles on flat and hilly terrain. Bring money for the brunch, snacks and lots of water. Write if your interested. Sat., Nov 4. Hike - Mt. Willey, Mt. Field and Mt. Tom. . Three 4,000 footers in one hike! We will spot cars, starting at the Ethan Pond Trail and ending on the Avalon Trail. Athough going up Mt. Willey will keep you warm, this is only a 8.5 mile hike and because the pace will be moderate (slightly faster than 'book" time), we should have time to feed any Canada Jays that find us.
